Doesn't work on hard wood

Trying to drill a hole in the hardwood floor with my trusty battery operated drill/screwdriver...the only electric tool I own...and It made a few scrapes in the floor and one 3/4 inch burn mark in the floor...Goodbye security deposit two days in.
